Welcome to the HiTek
Scuba 2007 Kids Camp Junior Open Water Program. It was finally time to hit the open water. The students traveled to the beautifu; Puget Sound to complete their Junior Open Water training. The first step....get your BCD straps wet. While they were at it, we taught them to asses the dive site and their method of entry.
Having the students evaluate their own diving
conditions will give them the confidence later in their diving adventures to
make the right decisions when it comes to safety.
HiTek Scuba strongly believes in making divers that are not robots that blindly follow, but rather leaders that can think for themselves.
Time to put that gear together again. By this point in their training, the student divers are completely confident in doing it all themselves. |
Even though they all did their own work, it still doesn't hurt to have another pair of eyes double check things. This is what it means to be a team. |
Safety...safety....safety! The only way to make sure that your equipment is going to work when you need it, is to physically try it out first. Finding out it has a problem underwater is WAY to late. |
This student diver is all done. Gear on, ready
to go. She'll wait patiently now for her turn in the water.
Hopefully not too long though!! As you can tell from the enduring smile, she's looking forward to getting wet. |
The boys in this group are busily checking out each
others gear. No mistakes here, means a fun and worry free dive.
You can't take too much time when your making sure that everything is right.
Everything is "check", all systems are go. Just a few minutes 'till launch! |
Even though the students are totally capable and confident that they are ready to go, it's still the instructors responsibility to ensure that nothing was missed, a list minute instructor check out is conducted just to make darn sure. |
OK! Here we go. Student work to get their masks, and gloves on properly before entering the water. This is where buddy assistance comes in big. The students quickly learn that with all of the gear that they have to wear to dive in cold water, sometimes that buddy assistance thing really pays off. |
Masks on, fins in hand, it's off to the great blue
yonder. No not the sky...but the depths of Puget Sound.
Water temp - 48deg F |
The students listen intently to their instructor for last minute reminders of the skills they are about to undertake. They've done them all before in the pool, but now it where it really counts. |
OMG that was sooooo cool! Dive is over, time to come in. They don't really want to, but the skills were completed on this dive, so now they get to look ahead to the next one. |
The NW waters are a bit chilly even with the 7mm two piece "Farmer John" style wetsuits. So grabbing some hot water out of the hot tub, and pouring it down their suits helps them knock the chill off as they conduct their surface interval between dives. |
Freshly certified Junior Open Water divers!! You can see the pride on these students faces, they did it. And they did it well. These guys were a great team, and as such completed their class with style. |
OK well style not withstanding..they definitely had a
great time, and while it was a serious class, it was also a fun camp.
The friendships made here were real, and we at HiTek Scuba are proud to call them HiTek Scuba Divers. They are part of the family now....go forth and dive! |
