Welcome to the HiTek
Scuba 2007 Kids Camp Junior Open Water Program. Learning to SCUBA Dive isn't just about skills in the pool, or putting together equipment. There is class room work to do as well. During the students week long camp we also learned about underwater aquatic life, ecology, and marine systems. But it wasn't all lecture!
The students got a chance to do some cool activities
as well. They learned about a very special, and cool artwork style as
well.
It's called
Gyotaku Fish Prints "Gyotaku" is the ancient Japanese folk art of painting fish. The first Gyotaku were created to preserve the true record and size of species caught by Japanese anglers as far back as 1862.
All of the students got to create their very own fish
print to take home with them. This is something very unique that most
"regular" scuba students don't even know exists.
But that's the HiTek Scuba way. We go way beyond the "standard". |
This student was very proud of his creation...as you can see he added his own signature to the artwork, or was he just messy, I guess we'll never know. |
Another class room activity that the students participated in was a marine biology study of the different classes and families of marine organisms. But just learning the names was not enough. HiTek Scuba added the "hands on" vehicle of learning by bringing in a huge number of actual specimens that students could touch, study, and classify themselves. |
Here are all of the specimens after the students have studied them. The activities included naming them, drawing them, and figuring out what the different organism had in common, and what made them different. This was a hands on approach to marine biology classification techniques. |
The Students filled out data sheets and answered questions about each classification. This was a full on science class that went hand in hand with learning about our underwater realm. After all that's really what scuba diving is all about.....isn't it? |
